Everyone here on the All Together Mama Team are all working remote from home. and we all have small children. Working from home as a mother presents a unique set of challenges, especially when balancing professional responsibilities with caring for children. So we thought we would get together and make a list of some things we are doing to help manage these challenges effectively.
Challenges Work-from-Home Mamas Face + How we solved them
- Distractions and Interruptions
- Challenge: Kids may interrupt work with requests for attention, snacks, or help with schoolwork.
- Solution: Establish clear boundaries and a designated workspace. Use visual or auditory signals (like a “Do Not Disturb” sign) to indicate when you are busy. Consider scheduling “work hours” and explaining these to your children(this is age dependent of course)
- Difficulty Separating Work and Home Life
- Challenge: Blurring lines between work and home life can lead to burnout and decreased productivity.
- Solution: Create a structured routine that includes specific work hours and breaks. Set up a dedicated workspace separate from family areas to mentally and physically distinguish between work and home life.
- Time Management Issues
- Challenge: Balancing work deadlines with parenting responsibilities can be overwhelming.
- Solution: Develop a daily schedule that includes work tasks, parenting duties, and personal time. Use tools like planners or digital apps to organize and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Limited Work Hours
- Challenge: Flexibility required for parenting can sometimes limit the amount of uninterrupted work time available.
- Solution: Optimize work hours by tackling high-priority tasks during peak productivity times. Communicate with your employer about flexible working hours if possible.
- Lack of Professional Support
- Challenge: Working from home can isolate you from colleagues and professional networks.
- Solution: Stay connected through virtual meetings, networking events, and online professional groups. Seek out mentors and professional communities to support career growth and provide advice. Finds times that best work with your current schedule. For Example: We have our Slack Meetings at 2pm once a week because that was close to all the small kids sleep schedules and before the bigger kids get out of school.
- Managing Childcare
- Challenge: Finding appropriate childcare or managing work while caring for children can be difficult.
- Solution: Explore options like virtual learning for older children, engaging activities or educational toys, and hiring part-time help if feasible. Consider setting up a “play area” within sight of your workspace.
- Maintaining Productivity
- Challenge: Staying focused and maintaining productivity can be challenging with frequent interruptions.
- Solution: Implement productivity techniques such as the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working in short bursts with regular breaks. Use productivity apps to track tasks and set goals.
- Guilt and Pressure
- Challenge: Juggling work and parenting responsibilities can lead to feelings of guilt or inadequacy.
- Solution: Practice self-compassion and set realistic expectations. Recognize that it’s okay to ask for help and prioritize self-care to manage stress.
