Recall: CPSC Warns Consumers to Immediately Stop Using LEHOM Baby Playpens Due to Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards; Violations of Federal Regulations for Play Yards, Phthalates and Lead; Sold Exclusively on Amazon.com

October 18, 2024 Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers to immediately stop using and dispose of LEHOM Baby Playpens because they pose entrapment and suffocation hazards for infants.

The LEHOM playpens violate federal safety regulations for play yards because the included basketball hoop accessory presents a head entrapment hazard and in addition, children can become entrapped beneath the mattress, posing a suffocation hazard. Also, the zippers contain levels of lead that exceed the federal lead content ban and the PVC suction cups contain levels of phthalates that exceed the federal phthalate prohibition. Lead and phthalates are toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

The importer, RYZ International Trading Limited, of Hong Kong, has not agreed to offer an acceptable recall remedy to consumers.

The LEHOM playpens were sold online at Amazon.com from May 2022 through July 2023 for between $103 and $140. The playpens have gray fabric with white mesh sides, printed road and animal designs on the reversible mattress, and a basketball hoop that attaches to the top rail with multi-colored balls. The playpens are labeled with “RYZ LOGISTICS INC” with model number “BPP-DG” printed on a label attached to the top rail. The playpens measure about 80 inches long, 60 inches wide and 28 inches tall.

CPSC urges consumers to stop using and destroy all LEHOM baby playpens immediately. To destroy the product, first disassemble the fabric cover from the frame. Cut up the play yard cover, mattress pad, and basketball hoop and then dispose of the pieces in the trash or recycling.

Parents and caregivers are reminded:

  • The best place for an infant to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or play yard.
  • Use a fitted sheet only and never add blankets, pillows, padded crib bumpers, or other items to an infant’s sleeping environment.
  • Infants should always be placed to sleep on their back. Infants who fall asleep in an inclined or upright position should be moved to a safe sleep environment with a firm, flat surface such as a crib, bassinet or play yard.

Report any incidents involving injury or product defect to CPSC at www.SaferProducts.gov.

CPSC Approves New Federal Safety Standard for Infant Support Cushions to Prevent Infant Deaths and Serious Injuries

October 17, 2024 Leave a Comment

Release Date: October 16, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has approved a new federal mandatory standard to improve the safety of infant support cushions in order to protect babies from injury and death. By a 5 to 0 vote, the Commission approved a new rule that addresses suffocation, entrapment, and fall risks.

Infant support cushions include infant loungers, infant head positioner pillows, infant sleep positioners and anti-rollover pillows, crib pillows, wedge pillows for infants, stuffed toys or pads and mats marketed for use as infant support cushions, multi-purpose pillows marketed for both nursing and lounging, and tummy time pillows.

CPSC is aware of 79 infant deaths and 124 injuries between 2010 and 2022 associated with infant support cushions, with most injuries and deaths occurring among infants younger than 3-months old. The majority of these deaths involved the infant support cushion being used in or on a sleep product, including an adult bed or mattress, a bassinet, crib, play yard or on a couch, futon or toddler bed.

The new rule will go into effect 180 days following its publication in the Federal Register and will require that all infant support cushions manufactured for sale after the rule takes effect meet the new requirements.  The rule sets performance standards for infant support cushions to reduce the risk of suffocation, entrapment, and fall injuries and deaths including:

  1. firmness testing on all parts of the product’s surface that an infant can come into contact with, to reduce suffocations from the product conforming to an infant’s face and obstructing the infant’s airways;
  2. sidewall angle testing that requires the angle formed between any sidewall and the occupant surface to be greater than 90 degrees, to address the risk of suffocation and entrapment between the sidewall and occupant support surface;
  3. a maximum incline angle that cannot exceed 10 degrees to address hazardous positioning of an infant’s head and neck on the product; this effectively limits the side height of the product to slightly less than 2 inches, which provides a visual cue to consumers to place the product on the floor to reduce falls;
  4. prohibits the use of infant restraints that could suggest that infants can safely be left unattended in the product; and
  5. requires strongly worded on-product warning labels that are conspicuous and permanent.

“This is an important rule that creates safety standards for a set of products that – until now – were not subject to comprehensive safety standards and created suffocation hazards for infants,” said Chair Hoehn-Saric. “If a product is made for babies, it should be as safe as possible for their use. This rule advances our important work to improve the safety of all durable infant products.”

Babies can turn over and roll out of infant support cushions without warning. To keep your baby safer while using infant support cushions:

  • Never use infant support cushions for infant sleep or naps. If your baby falls asleep, move your baby to a crib, play yard, or bassinet.
  • Stay near and watch your baby during use.
  • Only use an infant support cushion on the floor.
  • Do not use on beds, sofas, or other raised surfaces. Do not place infant support cushions on soft surfaces or in other infant sleep products, such as cribs or bassinets, or anywhere a baby sleeps.
  • Keep blankets and other soft items out of and away from the product.

CPSC reminds consumers that the safest place for a baby to sleep is a flat, bare surface dedicated to the infant such as a crib, bassinet or play yard. Visit CPSC’s Safe Sleep Education Centerfor additional safety resources to keep your baby safe.

Recalls: CPSC Warns Consumers to Immediately Stop Using Kindly Toys Busy Board Toys Due to Choking Hazard; Violation of the Federal Regulation for Toys with Small Parts

October 17, 2024 Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers to immediately stop using and dispose of Kindly Toys Customized Busy Board Toys because the toys have small parts that can break off, posing a choking hazard to young children.

CPSC issued a Notice of Violation to the seller, Kindly Toys, of Vietnam, but the firm has not been responsive to CPSC’s request for a recall of this product.

The wooden board toy includes letters, shapes, a clock, a car and a plane that detach from the board. There are additional pieces with interactive movement that do not detach from the board. The hands of the clock, beads, and propeller of the plane components of the product can break, creating small parts that pose a choking hazard. There are no markings on the product. The letters are customizable at the time of order to spell any name.

The Customized Busy Board Toys are being sold online at kindlytoys.com and Amazon.com for about $50.

CPSC urges consumers to stop using the toys immediately and dispose of them. Do not sell or give away these hazardous toys.

Description: Washington, D.C. —The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Fisher-Price are announcing the recall of Fisher-Price Snuga Swings. The swing should never be used for sleep and bedding materials should never be added to it. If the product is used for sleep or bedding material is added, the headrest and body support insert on the seat pad can increase the risk of suffocation. Consumers should immediately remove both the headrest (by cutting the tether) and the body support insert from the seat pad before continuing to use the swing for awake-time activities.

Between 2012 and 2022, there have been reports of five deaths involving infants 1 to 3 months of age when the product was used for sleep. In most of those incidents, the infants were unrestrained and bedding materials were added to the product.

Consumers are reminded to never use these products for sleep and to never add blankets or other materials to the swing, even after the headrest and the body support insert have been removed. Parents and caregivers should never use any inclined seated products, such as swings, gliders, soothers, and rockers, for infant sleep and should not leave infants in these products unsupervised, unrestrained, or with bedding material due to the risk of suffocation.

CPSC continues to urge consumers to place infants on their backs for sleep. The best place for an infant to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard, with nothing but a fitted sheet. Infants who fall asleep in an inclined or upright position should be moved to a safe sleep environment with a firm, flat surface such as a crib, bassinet, or play yard. In 2022, Congress enacted the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, under which inclined sleepers for infants are banned hazardous products.

Consumers should review Safe Sleep – Cribs and Infant Products | CPSC.gov for more information about safe sleep for infants in crib and infant products.

The Snuga Swings were sold at Amazon, Toys R Us, Walmart/Sams Club, and Target nationwide from October 2010 through January 2024 for about $160.

The swings were distributed by Fisher-Price of East Aurora, New York. The swings are manufactured in China and Mexico.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately remove both the headrest (by cutting the tether) and the body support insert from the seat pad before continuing to use the swing.
